Document Fraud 201: Turn detections into decisions
A global institution runs all of its operations on the same detection stack. In one department, finding Photoshop in a document's metadata is a hard decline. In the other, it's how their main customer creates documents. Neither department is wrong. They’re offering different products, with different risk profiles, to different customers. The same signal flagged each time, but the decision was policy.
No two institutions are the same. When it comes time to scale a document fraud prevention workflow, detection capability is half the story. If one in three documents shows signs of tampering and only 1 in 10 show signs of fraud, the bottleneck isn’t technology, but risk appetite. And the road from 80% to 98% straight-through automation runs through a document risk policy most teams have never written down.
In this follow up session to our original Doc Fraud 101 webinar, Solution Engineer Nico Martinez and Product Marketing and Threat Intelligence Director Joe Lemonnier explain how anonymized cases from live deployments across banking, retail, trade finance, and insurance, including the rules customers asked for, and the ones that backfired.
Here's what you'll learn:
- Which signals are always a decline, and which ones require you to define your risk appetite.
- How to tell tampering from fraud when a customer’s e-signatures, translations, annotations, and other business processes stamps every page it touches.
- Why one-verdict-fits-all solutions fail, and the difference between industry-specific risk profiles and personalized precision-tuning.
- Why "approve, decline, review" may be the wrong decision set entirely.
- Finding the balance between informing applicants they are rejected, and teaching fraudsters the shape of your controls.
